Dressing up the cupcakes

I’ll have to write about how I decided on our wedding cake someday soon but short version: we’re having cupcakes. CUPCAKES!

I know this is very trendy but I don’t care. I mean, if we’re so worried about everything being played out by this point, why even have a wedding? Technically that idea is played out. Who hasn’t gone to one yet? Okay, okay, I’ll get serious here.

Thanks to Weddingbee, I became aware of the prettiness of Estilo Weddings’ cupcake wrappers. Have you seen them? Some of them are absolutely gorgeous but at $12.50 for 12 [or $48.50 for 50] there’s just no way I can swallow the idea of splurging on these.

But they’re so pretty! And I was a little sad that I wouldn’t be able to add a little bit of flair to our cupcakes. To be honest, that is such a me thing to do. I know my friends will just shake their heads and think, of course she did. In a good way. They don’t call me Martha for nothing! But I digress, after a little trolling on the internet, I stumbled upon a template to make my own cupcake wrappers. I was excited and thinking how I could get the fancy edged scissors to cut along the top and even use nice scrapbook paper.

But then I stumbled upon this:

DOILIES!

Regular, common AND cheap doilies! Ones you can find anywhere for a lot for a little! How awesome is that? So now thanks to Happy Birds Crafting Haven, I can have my fancy cupcake wrappers for less than a fraction of the price. That thumping you hear? That’s my heart being all excited like.

Of course, that will mean my sister will have to take the time to wrap our beautiful cupcakes [oh, I may have found a baker as well - promise, story to come!] and most likely without my help but I’m sure she can manage. I hope she can manage because I really want them. Especially now that I know I can have them.

Have you been super excited to find a DIY option for something you otherwise wouldn’t buy?

whether its an overplayed fad or not, the boy and i will be serving cupcakes at our wedding. my love and adoration of cupcakes is strongly documented and when i saw my first picture of cupcakes at a wedding i was sold. i don’t know why i didn’t think of it before. people have pies and cheesecakes and little mini desserts in lieu of cake all the time! why not cupcakes?

and why wouldn’t you have a cupcake? it’s cake! that fits in the palm of your hand! that should be exciting enough.

ahem, but today’s focus isn’t one the little delectable wonders themselves [i am really wishing i had one right now], but the towers that will hold said little delectable wonders. i was going through my google reader today and came across a post from cupcakes take the cake about cupcake towers from blue cupcakes. check out some of those towers [all pictures courtesy of blue cupcake via cupcakes take the cake] and let’s all drool over those delicious looking cupcakes and then looking down at your desk and being sad when you realize that they are not in front of you [because i did that several times]:

and just because i love this book:

but you know the best thing? the towers are TOTALLY diy-able! i swear! you can get one of those fancy cupcake towers at save on crafts [either round or square...or you can go a step further and make your own tower from scratch], some wrapping paper or scrapbooking paper, and ribbon and then just cut and cover to your hearts content! this is actually the route i’m leaning towards going [because those cupcake tower rentals can be killer!] so when it’s time to decorate you know i’ll be back with pictures.

even though i struck out on my attempt to procure a cupcake from starbucks [seriously, there are 3 starbucks within walking distance of my office - though admittedly i didn't have time to walk to the third one...i bet you five dollars they had cupcakes. the jerks] i figured i’d passively and temporarily appease myself by looking at pictures of pretty, pretty cakes.

shall we?
